Epiphany
This is a favorite Christmas story. Children love it because the Christ-child receives Christmas presents and they love Christmas presents. Adults love the story for its familiarity and its exotic character. Wise men from the East are terribly romantic –– as are their gifts of wonderfully foreign gifts of frankincense and myrrh.
We all love seeing nativity sets with wise men and camels standing around admiring the baby Jesus. And we enjoy singing, "We Three Kings of Orient Are" ––even though we aren’t sure they were kings….or even if there were only three of them.
I never knew what myth really was until I was a pastor. It wasn’t until I began to preach on particular texts that I noticed some of my favorite bible stories have been embellished with a variety of images that can‘t be found within the Bible’s pages. It was a perspective that pulled this busy pastor to a quiet halt. I felt a little sorry for myself at first, missing the reassuring traditions. And then I felt shame enough to ask myself, How important are they to my basic belief system.
There are so many examples. The apple that Eve ate and handed off to Adam can’t be found in Genesis. Hmmm. Since Matthew is the only book in which the story does appear, let’s take a look.
I mention these details as an indication that people hundreds of years ago had thought a lot about the stories of the Bible and began to build on them. It is just that they assembled their thoughts in a different pattern from us, and we can easily mistake their drift, because through the years, for some reason, the Bible began to be thought of as a history book by some, rather than a book that was written to inspire us.
That is why we must offer good Bible studies. It is not only that some of the stories have been creatively developed through the years, but often some of the translations into English are inaccurate. For example, the word stable with which we have become so familiar in the Nativity story is misinterpreted. The Greek word in the earliest Bibles actually means cave.
