Sermon Notes: MARK 6:1-13
HONOR AND SHAME
Particularly interesting in this text are Jesus instructions: If the disciples were not offered food and lodging, Jesus tells them to “….shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” Now, that doesn’t mean much to us, but in those days that would have been considered a terrible insult, total rejection involving a person’s honor. In Jesus time the society was based on a culture of honor and shame. A family’s honor determined with whom one could do business, where one could live, with whom their children would marry, and even one’s role in religious ceremonies. [iii]
The anger of the people in Jesus’ hometown involved the honor system. In Jesus’ time carpenters were usually itinerant, especially those from small villages. They were considered “without shame” because they didn’t stay home to protect their women and family honor. How could someone from such a low social stratum claim such wisdom and ability to perform such mighty works? [iv]
How indeed?
As an executive, a director of a large department in an international company located in the Southwest, progress in my career was limited. “A woman can’t do the work; women’s minds were not made for top management,” one of the VPs explained unapologetically. Unfortunately at that time, I didn’t “shake off the dust on my feet” as a testimony against them. I wish I had.
Have you ever experienced rejection because of your sex, race, creed, economics, education?
Have you ever been made to feel “shame” not for anything you did, but just for whom you are?
