Sermon Notes: TRAVEL
Travel by donkey, carriage or wagon was much more common than thought. The very poor, of course, walked, but it was not only difficult, it could be a matter of survival. I doubt many of the poor traveled any far distances. Travelers in those days had to bring their own supplies of food and water, clothes and other necessities. [i] But that wasn’t the only worry. A traveler’s life could be in great peril from outside influences. The story of the Good Samaritan resounded with Jesus’ listeners because they knew the reality of the dangers. Paul described, “….danger from rivers, danger from bandits….danger in the wilderness, danger at sea….hungry and thirsty, often without food, cold and naked” (2 Cor. 11:26-27). [ii]
When Jesus ordered the disciples not to take a thing with them, it certainly appears that he expected them to walk to the various villages, doesn’t it? Although going out in pairs gave them a modicum of safety, being a disciple of Jesus was a dangerous occupation in those days.
