Please help drive the demon of mental illness discrimination out of our societies.
In Jesus’ day and through most of our history, mental illness was seen as demonic possession. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the chains and shackles came off the mentally ill; however other kinds of horrible mistreatment continued in the United States, Europe, most countries around the world. In the 20th century mental illness was finally diagnosed as a physical problem. In the 1990’s drugs came into use to counter the chemical imbalances in the brain, but, nevertheless, a huge number of the mentally ill have no access to them.
Thankfully, blaming the devil is no longer the case in educated societies, but, believe it or not, currently there is a tendency to criminalize the victims. Fifty years ago, the U.S. had nearly 600,000 state hospital beds for people suffering from mental illness. Today, because of federal and state funding cuts, that number has dwindled to 40,000. When the government began closing state-run hospitals in the 1980s, people suffering from mental illness had nowhere to go.
Many thousands of patients formerly housed in mental institutions were released to be directed toward decentralized clinics to receive new medications and social services. However, many have had problems accessing services and some are now living on the streets without medications or assistance. Approximately one-third of homeless people are estimated to be untreated mentally ill.

Without proper treatment and care, many ended up in the last place anyone wants to be. "The one institution that can never say no to anybody is jail," a spokesman for the mentally ill says. "And what's worse, now we've given [the mentally ill] a criminal record."
We have gone backward in this area of civil rights. For example, in one of the Florida Jails, nearly half of the nine floors are mental health wards. It has been described as more of a warehouse, vermin infested, inadequate ventilation, lighting and water supplies. And yet the county spends $100,00 every day to house these mentally ill in prison. Take into consideration that the mentally ill generally stay in prison 8 times longer than the average inmate ….. And at 8 times the cost. Jail, a place for the treatment of the mentally ill? Doesn’t make sense, does it?
Four of the 10 leading causes of disability in all developed countries are mental disorders-major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Alarming new figures have revealed that one in four young people in Australia are battling a mental illness, with many problems triggered by drug and alcohol abuse. The first snapshot of Australia's mental health in a decade found that Generation Y is being ravaged by depression, anxiety disorders and substance abuse. Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals that 26% of people aged 16 to 24 — about 650,000 people — suffered mental illnesses last year.
This country is not alone. It appears that mental illness is becoming an epidemic among most of our young people. Untreated, this disability effects the future of our world.
Let us begin to address the problem in our churches by trying to eliminate the terrible prejudice against the victims. Please view the following videos from several countries:
