The Demons of Mental Health

If 1/3 of all the homeless on the streets were cancer victims , wouldn‘t you fight to do something about this scandal?  That is exactly the position of many of the mentally ill in the U.S. And no one is doing much about it.  Treatment is not only underfunded and typically uninsured to a great extent, the stigma of mental illness continues to be profound even though it has been proven that mental illness is a physical illness!

The social unacceptability of the mentally ill often results in the victims
of this debilitating illness not seeking treatment. This is not a minor problem. Mental illness claims approximately
20-25% of the U.S. and international population.

One in 4 to 5 people will suffer from a mental illness some time in their lives.

On Stigma:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw_I-G1smoo

Have you ever addressed this topic in your sermons... statistically 1 out of every 4 or 5 people in your congregation is suffering/has suffered from mental illness.

  • Will you preach about the disgraceful discrimination?

  • Will you teach your congregation of the love and compassion Jesus expects toward this group in our population?

Please see Sept. 6th for further notes and videos.

 Are you a Christian?

Today’s scripture reminds us that Christianity is no promise of health, wealth and happiness. Actually it is the reverse.  A true follower of Christ picks up his cross.,,,denies him/herself…lives by the gospel, not the standards of the world.

It’s not easy to hear the message Jesus spells out ........
“Did you feed the sick?  Clothe the naked? ……”  P
retty clear, isn't it?  What is required of a Christian,?  “Take up
your cross,” he said.  In other words, deny yourself as He did
.

W
atch this video:  Absolutely love this song...says it all. Click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2vg20QK0P4

What astonishes me is that I’m not hearing this in many “devout Christian” circles.  How many times have you told your members that it is their responsibility to make sure the sick, the poor, all those in need of help are being cared for in the same manner that they themselves expect?  “Love your neighbor as yourself,”  Jesus commanded.

Who should carry the burden of responsibility when someone dies from lack of healthcare….proper food?  I wonder, could it
be that we pastors are at fault for not teaching Jesus’ prime message?  I even wonder if this could be the reason the Christian church is losing so many members?

Power:  Christian Style

In Jesus’ day, children were the most powerless of all……they
were even less than a woman on a man’s list of possessions,
which, by the way, was just above his cattle. I believe Jesus chose
the child as a symbol, not because he or she was an adorable
innocent, but because the child had no rank in their society.
No
vote, no power, no ability to influence, no say-so about who's
in charge.

Jesus was saying, "If you're going to fight, fight, not to become
the greatest, but fight for the lowest place in the social order.
That is, become a slave of all." Slaves,
were at the very bottom
of the totem pole in that society. Fight to serve, not to be served!

Well, that's just not part of our agenda, is it? It certainly goes
against the views of most U.S. citizens who primarily determine
a successful life by how much money they have been able to
 accumulate.

"Jesus, you've got to be kidding! Are you saying that in your eyes,
those that spend their lives serving others rank higher than the
CEO’s of international corporations? “
Why is it we don’t want
to take as gospel truth those words of
Jesus?……What you do or don’t do for the least, (the poorest,
the most powerless of ALL ), you do to me!”

Please watch this short video on the remarkable Mother Teresa,
 explaining her willingness to serve:

But you don’t have to be a Mother Teresa to be great by Jesus
 standards. Martin Luther King explains:

United Nations………Why can’t we preach as eloquently as she?
